Causes of gynecomastia

Gynecomastia occurs due to reasons such as natural hormone changes, medications, alcohol use, anabolic steroid use, and use of some herbal products. These reasons are investigated before the operation. The cause of pseudogynecomastia is the accumulation of fat in the breast tissue due to excessive weight gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can breast enlargement in men be corrected without surgery?

  • If the diagnosis is gynecomastia, there is no correction method other than surgery. When the breast tissue grows, even if diet and exercise are performed or the hormone imbalance is corrected, the enlarged breast tissue must be removed by surgery. In case of pseudogynecomastia, which occurs due to increased fat tissue, it may take years for the accumulated fat tissue to dissolve, and if the skin has sagging, it will not return to its previous state.

What type of anesthesia is used in surgery?

  • General anesthesia is used in gynecomastia correction surgeries.

Can gynecomastia be treated by just removing fat (liposuction)?

  • Small-stage pseudogynecomastia patients only benefit from liposuction and can be treated. However, if there is an increase in breast tissue or sagging of the skin, liposuction is combined with gynecomastia correction surgery, and if necessary, excess sagging skin is also removed.

Will there be any scars after gynecomastia correction surgery?

  • Except for very enlarged or sagging breasts (for example, after bariatric surgery), this surgery is usually performed around the breast brown area and the surgery scar is not visible after recovery.

What is the recovery process like after gynecomastia surgery?

  • After the surgery, a special corset is worn and used for 4-6 weeks, depending on your recovery speed. Generally, patients can return to work after 1 week and start sports activities after approximately 6 weeks.

Is gynecomastia surgery permanent?

  • The effect of gynecomastia surgery is permanent for years as long as the patient does not gain or lose too much weight or suffer from hormonal disturbances after the surgery.
